Rep. Luis Gutierrez has made quite the name for himself as one of President Donald trump’s harshest critics, since the moment he announced his run in the presidential race last year, and has been keeping up the pace of going against him ever since.
And according to the details he revealed while speaking this Tuesday morning at the City Club of Chicago, Gutierrez will be working alongside several fellow members of the House judiciary committee, which will have for a goal to “file articles of impeachment against Trump before Thanksgiving.”
This however, won’t be the first attempt to impeach the 45th commander-in-chief, as Texas Democrat Al Green also filed articles of impeachment back in early October. However, according to Gutierrez, this will be the first time that a group effort has been done to file such impeachment articles.
“We appreciate single members putting in on their own articles of impeachment, (but) we’re going to use a lot of constitutional scholars and really make a case that the president should be impeached,” he explained.
However, he didn’t go into specifics about the grounds for asking Congress to remove the president from office, but he cited obstruction of justice as well as possible collusion with Russia, adding, “We believe he’s unfit to be president of the United States, and we believe that he’s violated the Constitution such that he should be impeached.”
He then went on to criticize the government’s hurricane relief effort in Puerto Rico, adding that it now depends on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, explaining, “I kinda like that Mueller — he’s out there doing his job,” he said, before further elaborating, “Our democracy may depend on that one man doing his job.”
